Black spot on Dog Vulva
by Mike(Cornwall, Ontario, Canada)
Hello,
I hoping someone can help me or my dog that is. She is a 13 year old black lab. And I have recently found this black spot on my dogs vulva.
I'm scared that it might be cancer. She has a history of infections on her vulva, but none that have presented this way.
I was at the vet a few days before discovering it for her annual check up. He did not look there nor did he listen to the heart or lungs, check for arthritis, eyes for cataracts, who knows what else he missed.
Anyway sorry for the rant. Can anyone give me an idea of what this is.
Veterinarian suggestion regarding dog vulva spot
Hi Mike,
I’m afraid that I can’t really tell what the spot on your dog’s vulva is without examining her. If it is new, and particularly if it is growing, cancer is certainly a possibility, although not the only one.
Older dogs are also prone to benign skin changes. Canine Cancers of the skin tend to grow continuously, have irregular borders and change the texture of the skin’s surface, while benign lesions seem to pop up out of nowhere but then don’t do much from there.
This is in no way 100% though, just general rule of thumb. At age 13 your girl deserves a more thorough examination than the one that you described. If I were you, I wouldn’t hesitate to take her to another vet for a check-up and to look at the dog vulva spot you found in particular.
Regards,
Jennifer Coates, DVM
PS: Please keep us up to date on your dog's condition.

Hi Mike...I'm not sure when you posted your 1st comment...
Did you find out what it is?
I just found something similar on my black BC mix. She is a rescue so I think she is about 8. She recently started leaking urine and I was looking around her vulva to be sure she didn't have any infections down there as a result.

Thanks for responces. I did post i a while ago. The second Vet I saw said it shouldn't be anything to worry about. More or less an old age spot. It hasn'nt changed since I first saw it 8 months ago. My Lab just turned 13 last month.

Good morning,
I have the same situation with my 13-year-old yellow lab. Just found the spot this morning. So very glad to find the same situation on this site as it is Sunday and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow to find out what it is. Thank you!

My 6 yr old Shi Tzu was injured by a careless groomer who nicked her vulva with the razor. After the injury healed, the black spot started and continued spreading and her whole vulva is black. I am worried. The vet said no problem. Now she is having a discharge which is gummy and hardens. She's going back to the vet and this time I want answers! Barbara in Dayton Tenn

Hello,
My 3 year old small dog has the same thing. I am a nurse and will inspect the borders and texture to see if it looks like cancer does. However, what was the result of those of you that took your dogs back to the vet? What did they tell you and what did you have to do for your dog if the skin darken spots were cancerous.
Thanks.
